Wimbledon Village - David Marshall

Fri 6 January 2006 - 6.00pm

An excellent turn out considering the unappealing weather and the long walk uphill from the tube station (a hardy bunch, those pub crawlers!).

- Wimbledon tube station then walk or short bus ride (93 to Putney).

The Dog & Fox neatly represents the modern Young's pub: it has good beer, a range of affordable food (sandwiches 4, meals 6) and a clean, spacious interior. With benches outside for sunny days, it's hard to fault the place.

This place is very much at the gastro end of gastropub. In fact, I'd say it's pretty much just a restaurant. Food is high quality and prices reflect that (£30 or so for dinner and half a bottle of wine or thereabouts), but for the same price you could do better.

good food, great german beer, but wine is heavily over-priced. be warned.

Terrific drinking hole with fine female clientele. Good grub too. Definitely recommend this abode. Has managed to combine the contemporary with the tradition styles to create a cracking boozer. Last time I was there I pulled a rubber plant.

Very comfortable sofas, great (and very cold) Amstel on tap, terrific menu, tasty barmaids and no riff-raff. Great!

Great food, great staff, one of the better bars in the village not full of merchant bankers or chavs and chavettes. Good mix of music and would definately recommend it
vodka lover - 28 Sep 2004 18:36

top watering hole - not for chavs

Anywhere that does a fat chip butty is good in my books. Week nights or weekend afternoons it's a great place to relax. Good wine list.

i was asked for ID even though i'm 22. think that says something about the usual age of the customers

(review from www.fancyapint.com )

- This is an enormous pub. So big in fact, it's got a wine bar in it, or at least attached. The pub caters for all, with a dark paneled public bar with big TV (hardly changed by recent modifications), a large panelled smoke-free bar with smaller TV's, another lounge bar TV-free as well as Smart Alex, the wine bar. Yes, the name. If it was a hair saloon (it's not) it'd be called something clever like the Cut Above, but does offer a pleasant space away from the sport, a dining area and also serves Young's beers, so is just the spot for a natter or reading the papers. Add the upstairs and mews terraces for an outdoor jar, and it all seems to work very well, with good service and happy punters, although we'll be back to check in the evening and try the food. Handy for the station, this may well be a meeting point or a place you simply don't end up leaving.
