DLR pub crawl - Pendar Sillwood 12.30pm onwards - 17th Aug 2013

About the crawl:

The types of pubs served by the Docklands Light Railway reflect the origins of the area (traditional rough docklands) or the incongruously planted financial district (upmarket nouveau white collar and completely pretentious and expensive). However, there are some that are in between; traditional pubs that are now quite respectable but retain some of the local feel (and some of the locals!) and/or modern bars that are quite interesting without breaking the bank. These are the ones we visited.

#2

1.35pm - 2.30pm

Little Driver
125 Bow Road, Bow, London, E3 2AN

- It has had its separate bars combined into one airy and spacious one, yet retains its ornate innards. Has a good selection of drinks and serves home made food. Also has a very interesting beer garden.

#3

2.55pm - 3.50pm

The Fox @ ExCel
Warehouse K, Western Gateway,
Docklands, E16 1DR

- There are two Fox pubs in the area. This one is huge. It is accessed from the walkway from Custom House station, which leads to the upper level of the pub. Down the stairs is the enormous ground floor section. If the weather is good, there is an agreeable outside section.

#4

4.05pm - 4.55pm

The Fox @ Connaught
Connaught Bridge, Silvertown, E16 2BU

- The most anodyne of the pubs today, although it does grow on one after a few visits. Sitting outside is pleasant if there's sunshine. Personally speaking, I was inside getting depressed watching the results of the first Premiership games of the new season!

#5

5.30pm - 6.30pm

The George
114 Glengall Grove, London, E14 3ND

- A smartened up locals pub, with three separate bars and an attractive beer garden. The bar shown in the photo is the rear one, where the food is served.

#6

6.45pm - 7.45pm

Lord Nelson
1 Manchester Road, Docklands, London, E14 3BD

- Another smartened up locals pub, it also has a beer garden if the weather is good.

#6

7.45pm - 8.45pm

The Ferry House
26 Ferry St, E14 3DT

- I dismissed this without much thought on the research visit. It looks like a very rough locals pub from the outside and having all round frosted glass, such that you can't see in, didn't help.
However, encouraged by my fellow pub crawlers, we went into it to have a look and found an astonishing place; a time-warp of a place (albeit smartened up) with a ha'penny games board, friendly locals and a mad Italian barmaid. It claims to be the oldest pub on the island (the island being the Isle of Dogs). Easily the pub of the day and nearly missed out completely.

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel, an alternative and much more interesting way of getting across the river.

The Cutty Sark's new modern surround as viewed from the Gipsy Moth pub. The southern access point to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel is on the left.

The Dome as viewed from the Cutty Sark, which is actually nowhere near the Cutty Sark itself.

Greenwich pubs to be decided on the night

- We did visit a few. The memory is a bit hazy, fortunately the photos above helped a bit!
