Clapham Common - Mike Rossell

Fri 6 Oct 2006

It's only in Zone 2...

(Please note that this map shows the main pubs AND the possible alternatives)

#1

6.30pm - 7.30pm

The Alexandra
14 Clapham Common South Side
London SW4 7AA

- A large and majestic building, with lots of memorabilia inside. The high ceilings keep the air fresh. Although often focussing on sporting events, its redeeming feature is an upstairs bar with large windows and balconies, ideal for watching the world go by. This is often a lot quieter because the crowds watching TV all stay downstairs - sports coverage means that we're unlikely to meet the stereotypical Cla'am crowd.

We have a table upstairs reserved from 6.30 onwards. The staircase from the street to the upstairs bar may be open - otherwise, go to the back right of the pub (behind the bars) to get upstairs.

#2

7.30pm - 8.15pm

The Belle Vue
1 Clapham Common South Side
London SW4 7AA

- Just down the road from The Alexandra, this establishment is a lot more cultured. Renowned for its food, nevertheless not fitting into the gatropub stereotype, this locally-based business always has Harvey's Sussex bitter on draught. There are also several speciality beers (on tap and bottled) and many unusual spirits. Bar snacks are available.

Moving on to Old Town afterwards ... for those of a sedentary disposition (or if it's raining), the 88 and 417 buses both stop outside The Alexandra and terminate at Old Town.

#3

8.25pm - 9.00pm

The Frog & Forget-me-not
32 The Pavement
London SW4 0JE

- This pub is a lot bigger inside than would appear from the street. Featuring lots of comfy sofas to slump in, there is also a rare bar billiards table. A large round bar provides plenty of space. Ceiling fans attempt to keep the atmosphere clean! There is a rooftop drinking area ... but who would want to go up there this late?

#5

9.00pm - 10.00pm

Rose & Crown
2 The Polygon
Clapham Old Town
London SW4 0JG

- This small, welcoming pub is directly next to the bus terminus. The most "authentic" pub on the crawl, there are often 5 real ales on tap. Also 5 types of sambuca - can anyone guess the flavour of the blue variety? (Raspberry is pink) The traditional layout inside features bar stools; there are tables outside. Bar snacks.

Prince of Wales (possible)
38 Clapham Old Town
London SW4 0LB

- A possible spill-over if the Rose & Crown gets too crowded. It's full of memorabilia, reminiscent of the Sir Richard Steele pub on the South Hampstead crawl. Small but cosy inside, some tables outside. At the last visit there were two real ales.

#8

10.00pm - late

The Sun
47 Old Town
London SW4 0JL

- Large popular place to finish, nice high ceilings and clean atmosphere. There are plenty of tables and chairs outside, also a quiet upstairs bar. Good for bottled beers at the last visit.

Other late-night hangouts available:

The Calf (alternative)
87 Rectory Road
London SW4 0DR

- A "typical" gastropub. Has a good range of wines, some nice bottled beers. Very stylish atmosphere. Stereotypical Cla'am hangout.

The Tim Bobbin (alternative)
1-3 Lillieshall Road
London SW4 0LN

- A locals pub.
