Kraków - Anna Pajor

Fri 1 June - Mon 4 June 2007

The London Mensa First Friday Pub Crawl went to Poland! Not just for the Friday but a weekend exploring the considerable charm of Kraków; its historical and cultural attractions, as well as the social night life.

FRIDAY

#1

7pm - 8pm

Faust
Rynek Glowny 6.

- A terrific, huge collection of fifteenth century cellars houses Faust, an Artistic-cum-Musical extravaganza right on the Market Square. There's a real energy here - the biggest club on the Rynek - and a motivated management to keep things humming and varied. Each room has its own character and distinct atmosphere - from a cafe to a trendy dancefloor.

#2

8pm - 9pm

Tajemniczy Ogród
Ul. Bracka 3-5

- Like many places to drink in Kraków, Tajemniczy Ogród (Secret Garden) masquerades as both pub and cafe, and it's a pretty excellent double-act in this case. Ulica Bracka is one of the more charming streets in the Old Town and Tajemniczy Ogród's tiny courtyard a cosy, continental-style gem. Whicker chairs, a split-level seating area inside, a great range of snacks and some of the best coffee in town make this place a secret that's sure not to stay hidden for long. Rock music, blues and other good music keeps the place humming until 3am.

#3

9pm - 10pm

Spolem
Ul. Sw Tomasza 4

- The theme of this pub is Communist-era propaganda with lots of beer and great live music thrown in ('Spolem' is a co-operative federation that was managing all stores during communism).

#4

10pm - ?

Morskie Oko
Plac Szczepanski 8

- Its name means "Morskie Oko" (by a famous lake in the Tatra Mountains).

SATURDAY

#1

7pm - 8pm

Alchemia
Ul. Estery 5

- Alchemia has become something of a flagship in the gritty club world of Kazimierz. Packed to the rafters almost every evening, this place is more than just a pub/club - it has become a genuine place of meeting and partying for the Kazimierz crowd. Overflowing into several rooms, Alchemia is strikingly decorated with old paintings and furniture but utterly without pretence. Popular with artists, most gallery openings throughout the district culminate in splendid bohemian madness at Alchemia. Unmissable.

#2

8pm - 9pm

Mechanoff
Ul. Estery 8

- With its strange half-human forms emerging from the walls, rough-welded bar stools and Mexican flags and paraphernalia, this pub could only be in Kazimeirz! In true bohemian style, it's a splendid mish-mash of food, drink and partying. Asked about opening hours, the proprietor replied that it's open from 10am until it makes sense to close. Splendidly relaxed, uncontrived, and with a good dose of humour.

#3

9pm - 10pm

Le Scandale
Plac Nowy

- A breath of fresh air on the hip Plac Nowy, Le Scandale has brought a smooth and sultry dash to the bohemian square at the heart of Kazimierz. In summer you can sit and watch the world go by at one of the tables outside - there's hardly a better place in town to do just that.

#4

10pm - ?

Propaganda
Ul. Miodowa 20

- Propaganda is a real finger-in-the-eye to the old communist system, a pub which is a brilliant and elegant parody of a past age, hilariously choosing to celebrate the defunct, flag-waving holidays of yesteryear such as the 22nd July. Expect to find themed parties at halloween, old socialist-style signs on the walls, and paintings of Lenin, all thrown together in a splendid mixture of pure socio-realistic mayhem. Open from 11am until the last customer leaves that night, Propaganda becomes the first pub in Kazimeirz to offer draught Strongbow Cider.
