Southwark - Pendar Sillwood

Fri 5 October 2007

This crawl features an assortment of drinking establishments in the small area between Southwark tube station and the river.

#1

6.00pm - 6.30pm

The Ring
72 Blackfriars Rd, SE1 8JZ

- A tastefully moderised pub, its name actually refers to a boxing ring, celebrated by a collection of framed boxing photos incongruously adorning the walls.

This pub has been included in the crawl for early birds who don't want to kill time elsewhere though it's not guaranteed that the host will arrive for 6pm. It couldn't be included later in the crawl as it's too small to cope with the 30 or more attendees that the crawl will probably have later in the evening but it's worth a visit if you can get there in time.

#2

6.30pm - 7.15pm

Baltic
74 Blackfriars Rd, SE1 8HA

- More of a wine bar than pub but they serve all manner of drinks, including an impressive range of vodkas! Fancyapint.com rate the food as being good but with slightly small portions and not the speediest service.

#3

7.20pm - 8.00pm

Prince Albert
Colombo St, SE1

- Is bigger than it looks from the outside. There is a better pub (the Rose & Crown) slightly further down Colombo St but we wouldn't all fit in it.

#4

8.00pm - 8.40pm

Paper Moon
24 Blackfriars Rd, SE1 8NY

- Another modernised pub, it is an unpretentious place.

#5

8.45pm - 9.30pm

Bar 242
242 Blackfriars Rd, SE1

- The highlight of the evening. This idiosyncratic establishment is the complete antithesis of boring chain pubs. It utilises former wine cellars underneath the cobbled ramp that once led to a railway goods station.

#6

9.30pm - 10.15pm

Mad Hatter Hotel
3 - 7 Stamford St, SE1 9NT

- Marvellous smart Fuller's bar that was offering three pints for the price of two on the research visit (hic!). Plenty of space inside.

#7

10.20pm - closing

Doggett's Coat & Badge
Blackfriars Bridge, SE1 9UD

- Often infested by loud boorish types during the early evening, they hopefully should have gone by this time. The pub is set over four floors - well worth a visit for the river views.
