Easter Friday and an inconvenient place to get to, so not as many attendees as normal. Nevertheless, those who did turn up enjoyed what turned out to be an excellent crawl.

The Queen's Hotel
26 Broadway Parade,
Tottenham Lane
N8 9DE
Gastro inclined these days but one half is still for drinkers (plus the garden). Fancyapint.com said this:
The Queen's Hotel is one of the more impressive-looking pubs in north London. Architecturally similar to the Salisbury a couple of miles away, in an attempt to attract young Crouch Enders this once time rough local decided to go the gastro route a few years back. As a former Victorian hotel little touched since the 1930s, there are many great original features, including leaded windows, etched glass, fireplaces and a wonderfully ornate ceiling; no surprise its both Grade II listed and very popular. You'll usually find two or three ales on at any one time and service was prompt on the busy Friday night we last visited. A large heated beer garden was keeping the smokers happy and the overall atmosphere was very convivial. As is often the case at such times, however, the separate dining room was virtually empty. If you do fancy eating though expect British gastro staples priced between £9 and £15. Overall a good pub in an area filled with good pubs. |

King's Head

Well known for its downstairs comedy and music clubs. It was Crouch End's place to be once upon a time (er, my youth) but seems now to be resting on former glories. Still worth a nostalgic visit though. |

Harringay Arms

Under new (Australian) management, it is entertainingly idiosyncratic and considered by some to be the star pub around here now. |

Devonshire House

Cheap beer and food so it must be.....a Wetherspoons!
It's definitely one of the more presentable examples though and certainly an improvement on the insipid All Bar One that used be here. |

The Railway Tavern
23 Crouch End Hill, N8 8DH
The actual railway has long since gone but the pub is still here. Fancyapint.com:
Until a couple of years ago, the Railway Tavern was one of the last blokey boozers in Crouch End - a testament to big screen footy and cooking lager. However, after a change of ownership and a much needed revamp it's searching for a new, younger, more affluent demographic. Housed in a nice 1930s building, a large handful of original features have thankfully been retained, including a nice fireplace and the wooden panelling. There's usually a couple of ales on tap and those in search of lager will find an above average selection. Despite all the positives, it never seems to get as busy as other pubs in the area, which is rather odd, as its arguably one of the better places to have a drink. |

Kiss The Sky
18-20 Park Road, N8 8TD
We had one drink in here. It is an interesting place and attracts interesting people but its nature is more club than pub so we moved on. Fancyapint.com said this:
For any Crouch Enders still a little too young at heart to trade in their urbane, carefree lifestyle for a three wheeled buggy just yet, Kiss The Sky is probably the bar in N8. Our Saturday night found a lively but relaxed atmosphere, filled with locals a little too lazy to make the trek into Central London for a good night out - and who can blame them? With a mishmash of furniture and a simple colour scheme the décor is comfortable enough, while a good drinks list and better-than-average music policy add to the charm. The guys in charge also clearly understand how run a bar - their friendly and chatty demeanour puts everyone in a good mood, while they also take their cocktail making pretty seriously. There's very few quality late night venues in Crouch End (the market is saturated with gastropubs) but Kiss The Sky manages fill this gap very nicely indeed. All this and we managed to get to the end of our review without referencing Jimi Hendrix. |

The Maynard

I won't go into the history of this pub: the ornate bar ripped out, the atmosphere lost to gastrocrap, blah, blah. However, a recent visit revealed that it seems to have recovered and its re-invention now makes for an atmosphere not available elsewhere in Crouch End.
An honourable mention for those who went back to Harringay Arms after this to continue drinking! |
