- Has infamous associations with yesteryear and it seems as
if the pub is being preserved as a 1950s museum piece. In 1955
Ruth Ellis was hanged for fatally shooting her lover, David Blakely,
outside this pub. Legend has it that some of the bullet holes are still visible
in the tiles on the exterior (assuming they are bullet holes that is, not just other damage). The outcry concerning the case
was partially responsible for the eventual abolition of the death
penalty - Ruth Ellis remains the last woman to be hanged in
this country. |
