Hampstead Heath - Pendar Sillwood 4 May 2012 - 6.30pm

A welcome return to a favourite area.

#1

6.30pm - 7.15pm

Freemasons Arms
32 Downshire Hill
London NW3 1NT

A mainly gastro pub but it does have an impressive garden if the weather is good.

#2

7.20pm - 8.10pm

Magdala
2a South Hill Park
London NW3 2SB

- Has infamous associations with yesteryear and it seems as if the pub is being preserved as a 1950s museum piece. In 1955 Ruth Ellis was hanged for fatally shooting her lover, David Blakely, outside this pub. Legend has it that some of the bullet holes are still visible in the tiles on the exterior (assuming they are bullet holes that is, not just other damage). The outcry concerning the case was partially responsible for the eventual abolition of the death penalty - Ruth Ellis remains the last woman to be hanged in this country.

#3

8.10pm - 8.55pm

Garden Gate
14 South End Road
London NW3 2QE

Has a large selection of continental beers and if the weather is good, a large garden to drink them in.

#4

8.55pm - 9.40pm

Roebuck
15 Pond Street
London NW3 2PN

Has been taken over by Young's but retains the upmarket feel.

#5

9.40pm - 10.20pm

The White Horse
154 Fleet Road
London NW3 2QX

Back down to earth, and down the hill, for an unpretentious 'normal' pub.

#6

10.25pm - closing

The Stag
67 Fleet Road
NW3 2QU

Recently refurbished. The tattiness it has previously has gone and is now very popular.
