There are various ways to explain the attraction of pub crawls. Getting to know new areas of London is certainly an attraction. As is variety. An interesting viewpoint, reproduced below, is from Cecile Frogh, an American Mensan, who attended the Annual Gathering pub crawl:

I truly enjoyed the pub crawl. This crawl idea is excellent. Specifically, taking a walk between each drink tends to keep the head clearer than does chatting and drinking in one place; it also tends to remix the conversational groupings. Pub crawl - a fine British cultural practice.

Previous First Friday pub crawls

The First Friday pub crawls had an A to Z theme from May 2001.
It worked so well that a second run through the alphabet followed it.
Details of those crawls:

May 2001 - Apr 2006

The crawls reverted back to being non-themed after the two A-Z runs and after this Circle Line theme.
Details of the crawls:

May 2006 - Dec 2008

Apr 2011 - present
