An all day extravaganza:
First half:
Rendezvous between 12 noon and 12.30 pm at the Colliers
Tup, just over the road from Colliers Wood underground station.
If its a sunny day, we'll be in the beer garden at the back.
Note, for those driving, an excellent navigation aid
is the Colliers Wood Tower, recently voted the Capital's Ugliest Building by a landslide
in a BBC London poll. It's opposite the pub, and you can't miss
it (if you do, it's probably because the locals have blown it
up.)
From 12.45pm we will take a short trip up the River
Wandle to Merton
Abbey Mills, a scenic riverside market, with some excellent
places to eat and drink.
(Local wildlife on the bank
of the River Wandle (actually a fox))
(the computer on the bottom right of the photo is powered by
the waterwheel)
For those who want to take it easy by the riverside,
the William Morris pub, right next to the
marketplace, has a popular beer garden.
(the beer garden of the William
Morris on the bank of the River Wandle)
The additional option of a short
walk down part of the River Wandle Trail, which passes right
next to the market area. The map here includes details of the route (we would only
be walking a short section on the day).
We can set off around 3pm, and
take in a few of the local sights including the City Farm (5
minutes away), and Morden Hall Park (a National Trust conservation
area 15 minutes away). Will aim to be back in the marketplace
around 4.30pm at the latest. There are plenty of scenic places
to stop off by the riverbank.
(nearly run over by a tram!)
From 5pm, we'll be visiting
some local pubs and eating places. Late stragglers can meet us
once again at the Colliers Tup between 5 and 5.30 pm

one of the smallest pubs in the area!

7pm onwards eating & drinking alternatives.
(R1) 7pm - 8.30 pm: The Cedar (Lebanese), 144
Merton High Street, South Wimbledon, SW19 1BA
- For those likely to be hungry by this time, I recommend
the Cedar, a very popular and relatively inexpensive Lebanese
restaurant in Merton High Street. Book places directly if you
wish, by calling 020 8543 4520.

Otherwise, Marimba, just 100 yards away at 190 Merton High Street,
includes an excellent, exotic - and slightly more expensive -
African-themed restaurant. Book this directly if you wish, by
calling 020 8540 3888, or if you prefer not to eat at all, just
turn up after 7pm and have a few drinks at the bar.
(R2) 7pm - 8.30 pm: Marimba (South African),
190 Merton High Street, South Wimbledon, SW19 1AX
- Just opened, this friendly African-themed bar/restaurant
was previously known as the Piano Lounge. Given the change of
management, no reviews yet available. Nearest tube stop is South
Wimbledon.
Hopefully, there should be enough options there for
everyone to enjoy on the day.

The Grove Tavern
2 Morden Rd
South Wimbledon
London SW19 3BH
- Just opposite South Wimbledon tube station. This venue has
live bands on a Saturday evening, but costs £3 to get in
after 9pm.
Then, optionally, and if the bands at the Grove aren't too
good on the night...

Hideaway
175 Kingston Road
Wimbledon
London SW19 1LH.
- Completely untried and untested by your host, but with good
reviews and what sounds like an excellent range of beers. For
those who want to make a quick getaway, convenient for tram (Merton
Park), Northern Line (South Wimbledon) and District Line/Mainline
rail services (Wimbledon Station, Broadway).

- Finally, and optionally, from 10.45 pm onwards, the Kilkenny
- Irish pub, right next to South Wimbledon tube station. Mixed
reviews, but should do reasonable last orders.
There are also plenty of takeaways, minicab, taxi & bus
options from this point, plus easy access to Wimbledon Broadway
and the tram service.
