Jerusalem Tavern
55 Briton Street
London EC1M 5UQ
- This tiny but characterful pub is the only pub in London
that serves the splendid ales from St Peter's brewery in Suffolk
on draught (more details here.) Well worth trying to make
it for an early pint.

- Hidden in a quiet alley between Aylesbury Street and St
John's Square, this is the finest Belgian beer emporium in London
in my opinion. They have well over 100 to choose from (including
a dozen or so on draught). They also do good hearty food and
fantastic frites.

The Crown Tavern

The Horseshoe
24 Clerkenwell Close
London EC1R 0AG
- Our first stop off in Clerkenwell Green is the Crown. The
pub used to be a Victorian music hall called the Apollo and offers
a variety show of ales. On the research trip, the large outdoor
drinking area at the front was crammed due to the curious London
Oasis installation. However, if it's too busy, we can pop up
the road to the Horseshoe in the quiet Clerkenwell Close which
has a charming beer garden at the back.

The Bowler
32 Bowling Green Lane
London EC1R 0BJ
- This is half-pub, half-dining room looks as though it does
good food. The pub side is pleasantly cosy and, rarely for a
London pub, offers Brakspear on draught.

The Eagle
159 Farringdon Road
London EC1R 3AL
- Was this the original "gastropub"? Certainly,
the food is pretty good and much of it is prepared in the open
kitchen which forms an extension of the bar.

The Coach & Horses
26-28 Ray Street
London EC1R 3DJ
- A pub in three parts. The front part around the bar seems
normal enough but then there's the bedouin-tent style extension
and a charming beer garden.

(The pace of a Mensa pub crawl just too much for this guest!)

City Pride
28 Farringdon Lane
London EC1R 3AU
- We finish off back at Clerkenwell Green. Hopefully, there'll
be room for us at the Green, a classy establishment on the corner
of, well, The Green. Failing that, there's the no-frills City
Pride just a couple of doors up. Depending on whether either
of the pubs have got one of the nice new licences allowing them
to stay open until 12, maybe we could go to both!
