Marylebone East - Robert Beckwith

Fri 4 May 2007

Despite the competition of IMAG, there were still 30+ people at this crawl.

[The Golden Eagle at about 6.10pm and already the crawl is going well; all the people to the left of the pub's entrance door are Mensan pub crawlers!)

"An excellent little pub that was spruced up not so long ago, thankfully retaining it's original character. The beer is excellent, a good range - eg St. Austell's Tribute and Tinners - and well kept, which alone makes it worth a visit and the wine list has recently been updated. It's not always open (especially at the weekend), but it is one to seek out, if only to see what a traditional English boozer used to be like. The place is usually brimming with people who enjoy a sing song around the upright piano , when the pianist's in (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday), but it can be undeservedly quiet when he's not. It's straight out of an Ealing comedy. I say!"

"After a few identity changes in recent years, this place has settled down. It's not a bad place at all, with Courage best and Directors on the hand pumps and proper pub grub served downstairs (upstairs there's a restaurant) including such delights as Spam fritters. Being in a Marylebone backwater, this place hardly ever gets crowded, although there's a weekday lunchtime trade, so if you need place for a quiet pint in the area, this place will do nicely. The service is prompt and friendly and the prices are par for the area."

"This is a fine old Sam Smith's pub tucked away in a mews, just a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of Marylebone Road and Portland Place. As it's a Sam Smith's pub, the beer is what you'd expect and there's decent enough pub grub (filling a hole, rather than tickling the taste buds). It rarely gets crowded, although it picks up after work for a couple of hours. It is on the tourist map and you'll find a few in here, but it's so difficult to find that only a few manage to find it. If you like Sam's produce, the Dover Castle is just the place to put your feet up, and read a good book or ponder eternity."
