London Mensa Oxbridge pub crawl

Part 2 – Cambridge – Saturday 16th August

The three components are:

1) Punting on the river - Saturday afternoon
2) Cambridge pub crawl - Saturday evening
3) Grantchester walk - Sunday afternoon

Details:

1) Punting on the river - Saturday afternoon

In my (entirely biased) opinion, the punting is Cambridge is very much better than in Oxford. We shall be punting along the Backs past some of Cambridge's most famous colleges. We'll be meeting for lunch from 12 at the Granta on Newnham Terrace. With its pleasant riparian aspect, it's by far the nicest of the pubs around the Mill Pond and slightly away from the hordes of tourists on Silver Street [n.b. the pub crawl map on the pub crawl page below shows the location of the Granta - numbered #0].

We'll then cast off from the punt hire place next door for a couple of hours messing about on the river Cam. I'll aim to book at least one punt in advance, and so it would be helpful if you could let me know if you're coming punting in advance so that I can book another if need be.

Travel

Getting to Cambridge is perhaps not quite as easy as getting to Oxford, but it's worth it when you get there! It might be worth planning on staying over – not least because you can then come to Grantchester on the Sunday.

There are trains from both Liverpool Street and Kings Cross. The trains from King's Cross are faster during the day. The Cambridge Express leaves Kings Cross at quarter past and quarter to the hour and takes just over 45 minutes. However, by late evening, they are not so fast – the last train leaves Cambridge at 23:05 and gets in to Kings Cross at 00:34.

There are more regular trains from Liverpool Street, but they take between 70 and 90 minutes. The last train back to Liverpool Street leaves Cambridge at 22:51 and gets in at 00:13.

Cambridge railway station is not exactly in the centre of town. There are regular buses and plenty of taxis but it would take about 25/30 minutes to walk to the centre, longer to get to the Granta.
